Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Supervisor , the Laboratory Assistant is responsible for collecting, receiving and processing blood specimens; receiving and processing specimens for bacterial culture. Duties include: receiving and processing blood samples; centrifugation and loading barcoded specimens onto automated analyzers that are interfaced to the LIS; preparing aliquots and handling of reference lab specimens; performing waived and moderate complexity testing under direct supervision. Additional duties include clerical and telephone communication in support of the Laboratories functions.

Laboratory Scientist and performs a variety of laboratory activities and tests as related to Medical Technology as defined in section 1034.1 of Title 17, Calif. Admin. Code. Unlicensed person may not perform any part of a manual nor any part of an automated procedure that requires measurement or calculation. Unlicensed person may not make any decisions related to the reading of standard or control results for any test procedure. All laboratory results must be critically reviewed and verified for accuracy, reliability and validity by a licensed Clinical. Laboratory Scientist before results are sent out. A laboratory assistant can also perform venipunctures, heelstick and/or fingersticks for the purpose of withdrawing blood for laboratory test procedures on neonate, infant, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

The Laboratory provides full phlebotomy services with staff in all inpatient and outpatient areas. Our phlebotomy staff have all completed an accredited phlebotomy program and most are nationally certified. Our phlebotomy staff use a state-of-the-art wireless handheld computer to ensure patient safety.
