St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center and the Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) have consistently been recognized for clinical and research excellence in an academic medical center setting and for the high quality of patient and employee experiences in the organizations.  Laboratory-based research and patient-oriented clinical studies have international stature and often involve extensive collaborations with academic and industry partners regionally, nationally and globally.  There are educational experiences at secondary school, undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels.  Administrative functions ensure that there is safe, ethical and responsible conduct of research and facilitate research management and interfaces with other units in the Hospital and Institute.  Opportunities exist to become part of this unique and dynamic enterprise.   We seek outstanding applicants for a full-time research assistant professor faculty position in the laboratory of Dr. Ruchira Jha, Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neurobiology at the Barrow Neurological Institute. An MD, MD/PhD or PhD scientist in neuroscience or closely related field is sought for the translational study of cerebral edema and contusion expansion after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our NIH funded laboratory focuses on translational research in TBI, with a particular interest in secondary injury processes that are clinically relevant to the care of patients. Our preclinical laboratory work is primarily in TBI models (including use of various transgenics). We also use human tissue and biofluid samples to explore and evaluate potential biomarkers and how genetic differences may inform precision medicine. Our work frequently involves extensive collaborations with other university laboratories and networks nationwide.   Applicants are expected to have an excellent track record of academic work including rigorous scientific method and publications. The ideal candidate would be highly motivated and interested in the field of acute brain injury, translational research, and understanding mechanisms underlying secondary injury processes that are clinically relevant and major but modifiable contributors to outcome. Successful candidates will have experience in independent and collaborative research, grant writing, presenting research findings at academic conferences, writing up research for publication, and supervising laboratory members (post doctoral scientists, technicians, medical students, residents in neurology/neurosurgery). Faculty candidates will work closely with and support the laboratory mission of the principal investigator, but be able to perform technical aspects of experiments independently. Faculty candidates will need to perform experiments involving techniques in molecular and cell biology, potentially single-cell technologies, pre-clinical models of disease (TBI), and physiology. Therefore, practical experience in basic science laboratory research techniques including skills in molecular biology (PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry/ immunofluorescence, cell culture, genotyping, microarray, FAC sorting) is expected. A basic knowledge of data analysis, statistics and bioinformatics (e.g. analyzing RNA-seq data) is helpful). Salary commensurate with experience.
