Under the direct supervision of a respiratory care practitioner, licensed under A.R.S Title 32, Chapters 13 or 17, is physically present at a work site and readily available to provide respiratory care to a patient, the Respiratory Extern will provide patient care for deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system. The scope of practice is based upon the AARC Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines and AARC Expert Panel Reference-Based Guidelines. Respiratory Extern provides patient care with the Staff RT and healthcare team; RN and physician. The RT Extern shall perform designated skills that have been trained on in an educational program and demonstrated competency in the clinical setting, as the extern education advances, so does the job scope, the extern will need to demonstrate more and more skills and proficiencies. The program is designed to provide the extern an opportunity to become more comfortable in the hospital setting, gain skills in organizing their work, and compliment learning provided in their educational program. The RT extern is involved in acute care setting and during life-threatening patient care areas and situations. The licensed therapist shall be readily available on the unit of care, but direct observational supervision is not required after validation of novice competency. This is a scheduled positon consisting of one (1) 12 hour clinical shift a week with flexibility as needed. The extern program lasts 17 months. The following are conditions for automatic termination: failing grades, change of major. Extern may apply for a full time respiratory therapist position upon passing RRT and obtaining Arizona State Respiratory License. Extern must pass RRT within 60 days of program completion.
