Position Summary:
The Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting with patient care within the assigned work area and participates as a member of the health care team. The Surgical Technologist contributes to the care of the patient by following established Surgical Services standards.

Position Summary:

The Chaplain provides spiritual/religious counseling and ministry to patients and their families, demonstrating competency in spiritual support and pastoral counseling, as well as dealing with grief, and death and the dying process. The Chaplain recognizes that during illness and suffering, individuals rely on their spiritual resources to cope and seek meaning. Through the use of prayer, pastoral counseling, sacraments, crisis intervention, active listening and referrals, a Chaplain is empowered to heal, sustain, guide, and to reconcile patients, family members and significant others. The Chaplain also provides a listening, supportive presence to staff, including physicians, and refers them to appropriate resources when necessary. Incumbents in this position shall comply with all applicable laws and rules including the Dignity Health Standards of Conduct and Dignity Health policies and procedures that apply to his/her job responsibilities, seek guidance when in doubt, promptly report any potential or suspected violation of Dignity Health Standards of Conduct, Dignity Health policy or procedure or applicable laws/regulations and when requested, assist Dignity Health personnel in investigating all allegations of violation. When called upon, the incumbent shall assist in risk evaluation and work collaboratively with facility/entity leaders to implement, monitor and mitigate risk corrective plans outlined by the Compliance program.

This work is in concert with the physicians, nurses, and other members of the health care team. This position adheres to the Vision, Values, and Mission of Dignity Health and St. Mary Medical Center.

The chaplain acts as a resource and liaison with physicians, patient/families and the Ethics Committee in addressing ethical issues regarding treatment decisions. The chaplain works closely with community clergy (visiting clergy), acting as a contact between hospital and parish communities to ensure continuity of pastoral care. Availability to work various shifts at St. John's Regional Medical Center and St. John's Pleasant Valley Hospital.

- Supports the spiritual services team by actively participating in regional and departmental meetings and educational sessions, contributing ideas, issues and opportunities for improvement. Participates in interdisciplinary and performance improvement committees as assigned. Shares new concepts with regional colleagues and collaborates effectively with patient care staff.
- Visits and ministers to patients and their families, providing counsel and determining appropriate care plans. Assesses needs and manages time and resources effectively, keeping accurate records of services rendered. Assigns a high priority to the terminally ill and those in mental, spiritual and emotional distress.
- Communicates effectively with supervisor, co-workers, physicians, clergy members and the public.
- Participates in continuing care rounds and patient care conferences, providing on-call services.
- Provides effective grief counseling and education, and offers outreach grief counseling when appropriate. Helps coordinate services of area clergy when necessary.
- Plans, prepares and coordinates prayer services as delegated.
- Acts as a public relations advocate for the department and regional health system facility by making contacts aware of spiritual services offered.
- Takes responsibility for the continued development of spiritual services volunteers, as assigned.
- Participates in a personal annual evaluation of qualifications and competency in specific position criteria and proposes a personal performance improvement plan. Continues personal education and integrates learning into the spiritual care of patients, families and the community.
- Performs other duties as required or as assigned by the spiritual services director.
