Position Summary:
The incumbent is an entry level Respiratory Therapist who can perform all therapies provided by the Respiratory Care Department throughout most of the hospital with minimal to moderate assistance with the exception of NICU.

The Respiratory Therapist II provides routine respiratory care services for pediatric, adult and geriatric patient populations including, but not limited to provision of inhaled medication, bronchial hygiene, oxygen therapy, noninvasive ventilation (NIV), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), arterial blood gas analysis and limited assessment of pulmonary mechanics (Forced/ Slow Vital Capacity, Negative Inspiratory Force, etc.) in accordance with Respiratory Therapy protocols and/or policy & procedure. Additionally, the Respiratory Therapist II may assist physicians with complex procedures such as endotracheal intubation and therapeutic bronchoscopy as needed. The Respiratory Therapist II is designated for individuals who may not have demonstrated/ documented competency in all areas of clinical care (adult critical care unit, emergency department and neonatal intensive care unit. When all requirements regarding competency and experience have been met, the individual would be eligible for reclassification as a Respiratory Therapist III.
Minimum
- One (1) year of experience as a respiratory therapist required
- Successful completion of accredited school of respiratory therapy and associated clinical rotations required.
- Associate of Science degree required
- Must possess a valid State of California License or Permit Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care
- Current BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP certification required.
Preferred
- Two (2) years of experience as a respiratory therapist experience preferred.

The RCP III is a critical care practitioner in the NICU, adult ICU and pulmonary/bronchoscopy. He/ she has completed all level I and II skills and competencies and has mastered all level III skills and competencies to provide patient care in the NICU and labor & delivery, adult ICU or pulmonary/bronchoscopy.
The RCP III is skilled in intubation and resuscitation, responds to the ED for critical infant/pediatric patients or assist with performance of video bronchoscopies and pulmonary function testing. The RCP III functions as shift lead when assigned and provides critical assessment and care as a member of the Rapid Response Team. The RCP III acts as a mentor.
Pulm/Bronch RCPs Job Duties
- Perform complete pulmonary function testing to include review of data and graphics to ensure accuracy and reproducibility
- Transmit test data into cardioserver and ensure tests are read and interpreted by the assigned pulmonary lab physician
- Performs quality monitors and testing to ensure lab quality compliance
- Assists physicians with performance of video bronchoscopies to include bronchial thermoplasty in the GI Lab
- Assists physicians with performance of endobronchial ultrasound for biopsy and cancer staging in the OR
Position Summary:
Under general supervision, provides quality respiratory care services including routine and complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures designed to evaluate, stabilize, prevent or remedy neonatal, pediatric, adult and geriatric pulmonary abnormalities. Utilizes a multi disciplinary plan of care, including respiratory care protocols, assesses indications, initiates appropriate therapeutic interventions and evaluates anticipated outcomes. Acts as a clinical resource person to department and hospital patient care team. Provides education to patients and their families. Assists in mentoring respiratory therapy students during clinical rotations. Organizes, delegates and coordinates the activities of the shift.
Minimum:
- Two (2) years experience required with demonstrated proficiency in the operation of complex respiratory therapy equipment, use of therapeutic agents, and competency in managing critical care patients (adult, pediatric, and neonatal) requiring ventilator support required.
- Associate of Science Degree required.
- Must possess a current and valid CA Respiratory Care Practitioner license (RCP) license required.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care required.
- Current BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP Certifications required.
- Experience with respiratory care protocols required.
- Complete mentor module program (adult care) within probationary period and successfully test out required
- Participation in perinatal continuing education program with demonstration of ongoing competency required.
In keeping with the Dignity Health core values, the Respiratory Therapist IV actively participates in the delivery of Pulmonary Medicine and Neonatal Intensive Care Services.
Minimum Requirements:
- Current California licensed RRT
- Minimum of five (5) years Critical care experience in respiratory therapy or three (3) years experience in a level 2 or greater NICU, competency in Neonatal and Newborn delivery Intubation and three (3) years experience in critical care and ventilator management
- Current California RCP licensure
- CPR certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Certification
- ACLS required; PALS certification required within three (3) months of employment
Preferred/Desired
- CPR Instructor or Neonatal Resuscitation instructor
- CPFT, RPFT or NBRC perinatal/pediatric certification

Provides oversight of operations within the Respiratory Care Department during a specific shift including serving as a resource for staff, ensuring efficient and effective resource utilization and quality of patient care.
The incumbent will perform arterial punctures, assist in the transtracheal catheter insertion, teach patients with lung disease about their lung disease and how they can imporve their quality of life, attend exercise classes and report patient progress to primary physician. Demonstrates competency in patient care for adult and geriatric patients.

Assignments are dependent on the specific experience, training and demonstrated competence of the therapist and the needs of the patients. The SLP is expected to develop their clinical skills with ultimate responsibility for assuming clinical competency.
