The UACC/SJHMC GI disease-site section leader is a medical oncologist who is fully employed by Dignity Health Medical Group and has knowledge, skills and commitment essential to the success of the UACC/SJHMC Affiliation.
Our goal is to create and sustain best-in-class patient care and research program. The Disease-site Section Leader will ensure the growth of the clinical patient care program and the implementation of a clinical trial research program. The Section leader should have a strong interest and some experience in cancer prevention or treatment research and be prepared to establish and facilitate the growth of a clinical trials program for their respective disease-site in collaboration with the UA Deputy Director, the VP, Oncology Services Dignity Health AZ and the UA Associate Director for Research Administration.
This program should produce good outcomes for patients, and include our participating community providers/partners where appropriate. The UACC/SJHMC Disease Section Leaders report directly to the Chief Medical Officer, Dignity Health Medical Group and have a matrix report to the UA Deputy Director of the UA Cancer Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s.
The Section Leader provides oversight and is responsible for the management of their specialty area including the clinical care of patients, teaching, research, patient safety and quality, and the responsible use of resources. The Section Leader will work collaboratively with Dignity Health and St. Joseph’s leadership and UACC and to assist in the recruitment of disease-specific team members.
As determined collaboratively by the Deputy Director and the Chief Medical Officer, Dignity Health Medical Group 10-40% of time will be allotted for administrative duties and/or research.
In addition to complying with the SJHMC/DHMG policies, the rules of our accrediting bodies and local, state and federal regulations, the responsibilities of the UACC/SJHMC cancer-site service Section Leader includes:
- Attendance at UACC/SJHMC committee, task force or project meetings as requested. May be asked to chair or lead committees, task forces or project teams;
- Attendance at Cancer Committee;
- Participation in recruitment activities including but not limited to, interviewing physician and other candidates as appropriate;
- Addresses patient experience issues or concerns promptly;
- Is responsible for patient safety, quality monitoring and performance improvement activities within their disease site and, as requested, will be an active participant on any UACC/SJHMC patient safety & quality committee;
- Works closely with the Deputy Director, VP and Dignity Health Chief Medical Officer to identify suitable community providers and establish appropriate community physician “partnerships”;
- Will work with the Cancer Registry Manager to ensure that new and recurrent tumor data is collected, and reports are generated and discussed with the members of their disease-site service;
- Will lead the disease-site Tumor Board; collaborate with the Tumor Registry staff to ensure that the Tumor Board is conducted according to the ACOS Accreditation rules; UACC/SJHMC policy and ensure that NCCN guidelines and AJCC staging are included in the discussion.
- Ensures physicians meet productivity, quality, patient satisfaction and other SJHMC and DH Medical Group goals and expectations;
- Works with the Deputy Director and the UA Associate Director for Research Administration, UACC-Phoenix, to develop and grow the disease-specific research program and to assure mentoring of junior faculty in clinical research;
- Participates in center-wide UACC Disease Teams to participate in feasibility and resource review of proposed clinical research protocols;
- Attends committee meetings, project meetings, planning retreats, conferences, etc. as needed to develop the disease-specific research program;
- Ensures that the physicians and any mid-level providers assigned to their Section achieve clinical productivity expectations.

Primary Responsibilities include:
This section leader will be the direct supervisor of the physicians and physician-extenders who are assigned to their disease-site program. This includes participation in hiring, orientation and training, scheduling, development of performance expectations and incentive goals, productivity monitoring, performance coaching and development plans, ensuring compliance with NCCN and other national and specialty guidelines, annual evaluations, counseling, and mentoring.
The section leader will participate in direct patient care 40-80% of the time as negotiated with the DH Medical Group Chief Medical Officer, and the UA Deputy Director and dependent on funded research effort.
The section leader actively conducts his/her own research, ensures there is a portfolio of open clinical trials for the program, and assures the program is accruing a minimum of 10% of all patients onto clinical trials.
This section leader will be responsible for patient safety, quality monitoring and performance improvement activities within their disease site and will be an active participate on any UACC/SJHMC patient safety & quality committee (s).
This section leader will work closely with the Chief medical Office, DH Medical Group, Deputy Director and VP to identify suitable community providers and establish appropriate community physician “partnerships”.
The Section Leader will work closely with the Deputy Director and the UA Associate Director for Research Administration to develop the disease-specific research program and assure research mentoring of junior faculty. Basic, translational/clinical, and cancer prevention and control research at the UACC are carried out in four outstanding research programs: Cancer Prevention and Control, Cancer Biology, Cancer Imaging, and Therapeutic Development. Cancer Center “Members” will have access to the 10 UACC shared resources that support over 300 scientists associated with the Center.
This section leader will ensure that NCCN guidelines are implemented, compliance monitored and variances assessed. Each Leader will work with the Cancer Registry Manager to ensure that data is collected; and reports are generated and discussed with the members of their service.
The section leader remains abreast of new clinical developments and ensures that they are introduced into clinical practice.
The section leader will collaborate with Tumor Registry staff to ensure that the disease-site Tumor Board is conducted according to the SJHMC policy.
The section leader participates in strategy, budgeting, marketing, media, philanthropic, consumer and neighborhood events as requested.
Medical Oncology Section Leaders will be assigned as needed to provide consistent coverage for medical supervision of the chemotherapy & infusion services.
The Section Leader will establish and participate in the management and coverage of the UACC/SJHMC inpatient service.
The Section Leader will be a member of and actively participate in a clinical operations committee and a research committee.
The Section Leader will participate in a UACC center-wide Disease Team, representing the Phoenix campus for their specific disease area.
The Section Leader will attend appropriate UACC committee and project meetings, planning retreats, conferences, etc. as determined by the Deputy Director and Associate Director for Administration, UACC-Phoenix.
Consistent with DH Medical Group policies, the Section Leader will ensure participation in community programs. These could include collaboration with oncology-related not-for-profit organizations, consumer education events, education for community physicians and other health care providers, collaboration with the business community and/or the healthcare community and other outreach and patient-related events.
Consistent with DH Medical Group policies, the Section Leader may be asked to participate in other activities as determined appropriate by the SJHMC President; VP, Oncology Services; UA Cancer Center Deputy Director; or Associate Director for Research Administration, UACC-Phoenix.
