In keeping with the Dignity Health core values, a Clinical Lab Scientist II performs routine and complex testing in multiple areas of the clinical laboratory in a timely manner with a minimum of direct supervision, provides training and technical assistance for coworkers, monitors and evaluates quality control for testing performed and performs routing maintenance and repair on instruments utilized.
This position is represented by SEIU-UHW and is covered by the terms and conditions of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
Job Summary:
The incumbent performs technical work of considerable difficulty, primarily in testing patient samples through various chemical, microscopic, serological, and bacteriologic techniques requiring a significant amount of independent judgment while operating and maintaining automated equipment. The incumbent will be required to evaluate new equipment, methodologies and procedures as needed. The incumbent is also responsible for section specific regulatory expectations as well as daily workflow to ensure timely and efficient departmental operations.
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, CLS performs moderate and high complexity testing in areas of Blood Bank, Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Microbiology, Serology and Urinalysis following established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, analysis and result reporting for patient specimens. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist may be required to rotate in other departments, work weekends and Holidays and cover other shifts as supervisor determines need.
Position Summary:
This position is responsible for performing the complete scope of tests in the laboratory section to which assigned, under the direction of the laboratory supervisor, the Laboratory Manager and the Director of the Laboratory (Pathologist). Incumbents in this position shall comply with all applicable laws and rules including the Dignity Health Standards of Conduct and Dignity Health policies and procedures that apply to his/her job responsibilities, seek guidance when in doubt, promptly report any potential or suspected violation of Dignity Health Standards of Conduct, Dignity Health policy or procedure or applicable laws/regulations and when requested, assist Dignity Health personnel in investigating all allegations of violation. When called upon, the incumbent shall assist in risk evaluation and work collaboratively with facility/entity leaders to implement, monitor and mitigate risk corrective plans outlined by the Compliance program.
Minimum:
- Bachelor's degree in Science required.
- Current California license as a Clinical Laboratory technologist limitation to practice within the applicable section of the laboratory. Specific modality scientist licenses acceptable.
Preferred:
- Two years microbiology experience preferred.
- Registration with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists desirable.

This position requires one year internship in a hospital clinical laboratory, a Bachelor's degree with a major in a biological science and demonstrated knowledge of modern clinical laboratory techniques and procedures, aseptic technique and proper safe technique in the handling of hazardous materials and biological specimens. Candidates must have the ability to trouble-shoot procedures and instrumentation and problem-solve effectively. California license as a Medical Laboratory Technologist and licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist required. The incumbent will perform chemical, microscopic, and/or bacteriologic tests and verifies results for use in the diagnosis and/or treatment of disease. Demonstrates competency in patient testing for neonate, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. Works as a generalist in primary acute care lab departments including chemistry, hematology, and transfusion serivce. The responsibilities for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist II include performance of all test procedures in the assigned section. The Core Laboratory incumbent must be able to work in all areas of the Core Lab (Chemistry, Coag/UA, and Hematology). The position in Blood Bank and Microbiology must be able to work in all areas within the section. The position for shifts II/III must be able to work in all sections of the laboratory.
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist must be able to perform the duties accurately, efficiently and independently, meeting the standards of all departments. In addition, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist II is expected to initiate QC failure corrective action, participate in inventory control, perform instrument preventive maintenance and troubleshoot instrument and reagent problems.
