    The Health Information Management (HIM) Coder is responsible for creating hospital disease and procedure indices by coding and abstracting all pertinent data from Outpatient Ancillary, Emergency Department and Outpatient/Ambulatory Surgery records. This position provides diagnostic and procedural information to the business office so that a bill for services can be generated.


    The HIM Coder requires a high level of professionalism; therefore, effective communication skills are needed for interaction with physicians, physicians' office staff, hospital staff, patients and hospital visitors.




    Minimum Requirements:

    • Two to five years experience in ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding in an acute care facility and experience in using a computerized abstracting, encoding and database systems is required.
    • High School diploma and successful completion of college courses in Medical Terminology, anatomy and physiology and a certified coding class.
    • Attended an accredited AHIMA program or two years equivalent of college curriculum in coding.

    • Complete technical knowledge of ICD-10-CM diagnostic and procedural coding and CPT-4 procedural coding.
    • Must have thorough knowledge of anatomy and Medical Terminology.
    • A high level of professionalism and effective communication skills are needed for interaction with physicians, physicians office staff, hospital staff, patients and hospital visitors.

    • Pass the ICD 10 coding test.
    • CCS Certification by AHIMA

    Preferred Requirements:

    • Certification as Accredited Health Information Technician, Registered Health Information Administrator, Certified Coding Specialist or eligibility for any of the above preferred (Can be waived based upon experience and score on pre-employment coding test).
    • Familiarity with computers and the general principles of medical record science is preferred.
