Responsibilities

Position Title: Director, External Communications & Stakeholder Relations

 

Position Summary: 

 

The Director, External Communications and Stakeholder Relations is responsible for issues management across the system, and in partnership with service area communicators. He/she collaborates with subject matter experts within the system office to proactively prepare for and manage issues that have the potential to impact Dignity Health’s positive reputation. In support of service areas he/she maintains the issues playbook (hard copy and box), and ensures that communicators are kept up to-date, or trained, as needed, on existing resources to manage issues. He/she works with SVP/VP and subject matter experts to ensure that Dignity Health manages as best as possible through the unexpected issue. Interacts in a collaborative manner across the organization to define program needs and requirements related to stakeholders, while serving as an internal consultant that drives required change management to meet objectives aligned with organizational needs to get in front of issues. Builds vision and mechanism to identify, create and disseminate a broad range of creative assets and educational efforts, such as print materials, presentations, newsletters, digital strategies, advertising, events, etc., to carry out strategies and tactics to manage positive reputation. Builds and maintains relationships with reporters that are known to cover controversial topics.

 

Job Duties:

  • Issues management preparation with key internal stakeholders; external landscape assessment/understanding.
  • Available as system wide liaison to service area communicators on issues; manage SME/issues briefs and keeping resource current and available. 
  • In partnership with internal partners identify stakeholder engagement initiatives to drive positive reputation through point of view on difficult topics. 
  • Media relationships with key reporters on specific issues. 
  • Content creation of assets to drive educational efforts where needed.

  • Excellent writing and verbal communication to multiple stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Directly contributes to strategy and content development, for issues that may negatively impact Dignity Health’s reputation. Has the discretion to manage confidential projects.
  • Ability to perform multiple communication initiatives and tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to prioritize according to their level of importance, daily and long term.

 

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience: 

  • Experience: Minimum of ten years of experience in public affairs, and/or corporate communications either on client side or in agency working on reputational topics that drive companies’ business goals.
  • Health care communications or advocacy communications experience preferred.
  • Working with and advising top tier executives managing through issues and crises a must.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, public health, communications or other related field required.
  • Special Skills: Familiar with partnering with associations and advocacy groups particularly in the health care sector.
