We seek outstanding applicants for a full-time post doctoral position in the laboratory of Dr. Ruchira Jha, Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neurobiology. An MD, MD/PhD or PhD scientist in neuroscience or closely related field is sought for the translational study of cerebral edema and contusion expansion after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our NIH funded laboratory focuses on translational research in TBI, with a particular interest in secondary injury processes that are clinically relevant to the care of patients. Our preclinical laboratory work is primarily in TBI models (including use of various transgenics). We also use human tissue and biofluid samples to explore and evaluate potential biomarkers and how genetic differences may inform precision medicine. Our work frequently involves extensive collaborations with other university laboratories and networks nationwide.
Applicants are expected to have an excellent track record of academic work including rigorous scientific method and publications. The ideal candidate would be highly motivated and interested in the field of acute brain injury, translational research, and understanding mechanisms underlying secondary injury processes that are clinically relevant and major but modifiable contributors to outcome. They should have experience in both independent and collaborative research, presenting research findings at academic conferences, and writing up research for publication. Successful candidates will be those who are open to learning new techniques given the rapidly changing scientific environment, good communication and teamwork skills, able to perform or supervise preclinical experiments (technicians, medical students, residents in Neurology/Neurosurgery), and are interested in ultimately transitioning to a junior faculty position maintaining a collaborative partnership with the laboratory principal investigator.
The post-doc will need to perform experiments involving techniques in molecular and cell biology, potentially single-cell technologies, pre-clinical models of disease (TBI), and pre-clinical model physiology. Therefore, practical experience in basic science laboratory research techniques including skills in molecular biology (PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry/ immunofluorescence, cell culture, genotyping, microarray, FAC sorting) is expected. A basic knowledge of data analysis, statistics and bioinformatics (e.g. analyzing RNA-seq data) is helpful- or alternatively the desire and capability of learning how to code in standard programs (Stata, SPSS, R).
