Manager of Phlebotomy and Lab Services Operations

Mercy San Juan Medical Center, a Dignity Health member, is a nationally recognized not-for-profit hospital located in Carmichael, California, serving the areas of north Sacramento County and south Placer County. The 370-bed facility is one of the region’s largest and most comprehensive medical centers, caring for more than 150,000 people each year and contains the only Comprehensive Stroke Center in the greater Sacramento region.

The incumbent is responsible for the direct supervision and operation of the Laboratory services provided by the Lab Assistants (Phlebotomist and Specimen Processors), and office clerical staff at Mercy San Juan Medical Center under the direction of the Director of the Clinical Laboratory Services. The incumbent is accountable for coordinating the efficient and timely processing of specimens, accurately and timely test results, reporting and charting of results in a cost-effective manner. Working in conjunction with the Laboratory Director, the incumbent is responsible for the administrative functions of the laboratory including safety, information technology projects, supply chain management, billing standards, and other specific administrative laboratory functions as assigned. This responsibility is to be carried out in a manner consistent with the Mission and Philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy.

Experience:

• 5 years of Clinical Laboratory experience in an acute hospital or an equivalent combination of work experience and education.
• 5 years of phlebotomy experience is strongly preferred. 
• Phlebotomy supervisor or management experience is strongly preferred.
• Prior supervisory experience is preferred.

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, and/or Health-related Sciences or an equivalent combination of work experience and education.

License/ Certifications:

• Valid CA Phlebotomy license or current CLS (Clinical Laboratory Scientist) license issued by CA Department of Public Health is preferred. 

Special Skills:

• Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal-relationship skills. Specific knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures, testing performed in a clinical laboratory, phlebotomy, and specimen processing work flow and requirements. Aseptic techniques, biological safety, OSHA and CAL/OSHA safety requirements. Computer skills. Facilitation and negotiation skills.
