Position Summary:


The Activity Services Director is accountable for the development and implementation of activity programs to meet resident needs and interests. Other responsibilities include resident transportation, as well as the management of the wellness program and coordination of volunteers.


Core Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Develops and implements resident services policies and procedures.
  • Assists with resident orientations.
  • Interviews and has new residents fill out the Social Activities Questionnaire.
  • Meets with residents whose functions status is diminished to determine and develop appropriate means of addressing their social, emotional and spiritual needs.
  • Prepares and organizes a calendar of activities. Posts and distributes the activity calendar each month.
  • Prepares the monthly resident newsletter.
  • Keeps resident bulletins boards updated.
  • Coordinates and implements exercise programs in conjunction with the Resident Services Director.
  • In junction with the administration, assists residents in coordinating activities of the Residents' Council and its committee structure.
  • Schedules and drives community vehicles for resident transportation needs.
  • Supervises other staff who function as back-up drives for the community vehicles.
  • Supervises and coordinates volunteers who assist in activity programs.
  • Develops programs and services for those residents whose functional abilities no longer allows participation in existing activities and programs and thereby encourages those residents to remain independent as they age.
  • Participates in meetings with area agencies involved in senior adult programs and services.
  • Attends educational sessions designed to improve job knowledge and skills.
  • Assists in the lifestyle transitions that residents experience (i.e., moving, adjustments to physical limitation, loss of friends or relatives).
  • Performs other duties as necessary or directed.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have two (2) years of experience in a social or recreational program within the past five (5) years, one (1) year of which has been full time in a resident activities program in healthcare/residential care setting
    • OR be an occupational therapist, music therapist, dance therapist, recreational therapist or occupational therapy assistant
    • OR have completed at least thirty-six (36) hours of training in a course designed specifically for this position and approved by the Department of Social Services
  • Must demonstrate an enjoyment and ability, as well as a desire to work with the elderly
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly with seniors
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Classes in gerontology preferable
